Section 201 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in India deals with the offense of "Causing disappearance of evidence of an offense, or giving false information to screen offender." This section states the following:
Whoever, knowing or having reason to believe that an offense has been committed, causes any evidence of the commission of that offense to disappear, with the intention of screening the offender from legal punishment, or gives any false information to any public servant intending thereby to cause such officer to use his lawful power to the injury of any person, or knowing that such officer is likely to use his lawful power to the injury of any person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or with both.
In simpler terms, this section states that if someone, who knows or has reason to believe that a crime has been committed, deliberately causes any evidence of that offense to disappear in order to protect the offender from legal punishment or provides false information to a public servant with the intention of causing harm to someone or with the knowledge that the public servant is likely to cause harm, they can be punished with imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both.
